Senegal: Abdoulaye Wade drops poll plans after riots

Thu, 06/23/2011 - 6:41PM by zhangmeimei 0 Comments - 2 Views

Senegal's president has dropped proposed changes to the country's constitution after police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at thousands of protesters outside Dakar's parliament. Air Max Shoes Outlet Online Abdoulaye Wade had wanted to reduce the proportion of votes needed to win a presidential election, and avoid a run-off, from more than 50% to 25%. He had also wanted to create an elected post of vice-president. The proposals sparked the most violent protests of Mr Wade's 11-year rule. Critics had said the run-off amendment was designed to ensure that Mr Wade, 85, was re-elected next year against a fractured opposition. He dropped that element of the proposed bill earlier on Thursday, but withdrew plans to create the position of vice-president after clashes continued outside parliament, Justice Minister Cheikh Tidiane Sy told MPs. Coach Earrings The president had taken into consideration MPs' concerns, AFP quoted Mr Sy as saying, adding to applause that: "He asked me to withdraw the draft legislation". 'Father's shoulders' Earlier on Thursday, clouds of tear gas hovered over the square in front of the National Assembly, where lawmakers had gathered to vote on the proposed changes to the constitution. The city centre was cut off as protesters set fire to vehicles and threw stones at riot police. Local reports said some ruling party MPs had been blockaded in their houses to prevent them voting. Nike Air Max There were also violent protests elsewhere in the city and in other towns in Senegal. Many people feared Mr Wade intended to give the post of vice-president to his son Karim, who is already a powerful minister in the current administration, said BBC West Africa correspondent Thomas Fessy. Critics of the proposed measures said Mr Wade could have then stepped down and handed power to his son. "We're not against Karim Wade," said protesting student Assane Ndiaye. "Karim can be a candidate like any other, but he shouldn't be carried into office on his father's shoulders." Coach 2011 New Arrival The government had said the proposed new post was aimed at reinforcing democracy by sharing power between the president and vice-president. Riot police also clashed with protesters earlier this week. The opposition had established a coalition called "Don't Touch My Constitution", while world-famous singer Youssou Ndour criticised the "abuse of authority". Mr Wade first came to power in democratic polls more than a decade ago but he is now facing growing anger at daily electricity cuts and the rising cost of living.

Libya conflict: Italy urges suspension of hostilities

Wed, 06/22/2011 - 6:36PM by zhangmeimei 0 Comments - 2 Views

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini has called for a suspension of hostilities in Libya to allow humanitarian aid to be brought to the war-torn country. Air Max Mr Frattini also said Nato must provide data on results of its bombing campaign and guidelines on targeting errors. Arab League Chairman Amr Moussa also urged a ceasefire on Tuesday, voicing reservations about the Nato campaign. On Sunday a Nato missile apparently misfired striking a residential area. The Libyan government said nine people including two young children were killed in the strike. The alliance acknowledged that civilian casualties may have resulted from it. Coach Colette Handbags Meanwhile Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi described Libya's opposition National Transitional Council as an "important dialogue partner" and an "important domestic political force". Rebel leader Mahmoud Jibril has been holding talks with the Chinese leadership in Beijing. Credibility 'at risk' Speaking to the lower house of the Italian parliament, Mr Frattini called for "an immediate humanitarian suspension of hostilities" to allow an aid corridor to be set up. With regard to Nato, it is fair to ask for increasingly detailed information on results as well as precise guidelines on the dramatic errors involving civilians," he added. Air Max Shoes But the French foreign ministry said Paris was against any pause. Such a move "would allow [Libyan leader] Muammar Gaddafi to gain time and reorganise", said spokesman Bernard Valero, quoted by AFP news agency. "In the end, it would be the civilian population that would suffer from the smallest sign of weakness on our behalf." On Monday Mr Frattini said Nato's credibility was "at risk" after the residential area strike. Amr Moussa also cast doubt on Nato's efficacy in an interview for The Guardian newspaper. Coach Ergo Handbags "When I see children being killed, I must have misgivings. That's why I warned about the risk of civilian casualties," he told the UK newspaper, adding that the military campaign on its own would not be successful. "You can't have a decisive ending. Now is the time to do whatever we can to reach a political solution," he said. An internationally supervised ceasefire was necessary, he added, followed by a transitional period "to reach an understanding about the future of Libya". African Union Chairman Jean Ping said he believed the West would ultimately accept its ceasefire plan, which paves the way for a transition but makes no mention of Col Gaddafi's departure, the main opposition demand.Cheap Air Max "The stalemate is already there. There is no other way," he said, quoted by Reuters news agency. Wing Cmdr Mike Bracken, the Nato mission's military spokesman, said it was not Nato's credibility that was questionable but "the Gaddafi regime's use of human shields [and] firing missiles from mosques". Nato's mission - to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya to protect civilians using "all necessary measures" short of a ground invasion - began in March in response to Col Gaddafi's violent response to a popular uprising. The intervention was mandated by the UN, and led by France, Britain and the US until the end of March, when Nato took over. Coach Backpack Handbags Having initially been given 90 days - which would have run out on 27 June - the mission has been extended for a further 90 days.

Syria unrest: Clashes amid large Pro-Assad rallies

Tue, 06/21/2011 - 7:19PM by zhangmeimei 0 Comments - 2 Views

Clashes have broken out between supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and anti-government protesters in Homs, Hama and Deir al-Zour. Cheap Kids Dunk Low At least seven people were killed when security forces opened fire on anti-Assad demonstrators, activists said. Large rallies in support of President Assad have been held across Syria, including Damascus, Deraa, Hama and Homs, state TV reported. On Monday, Mr Assad addressed the country, calling for national dialogue. He called on refugees in Turkey to return to Syria and promised various reforms in the speech, which was dismissed by the opposition as inadequate. Nike Air Max BW Rights groups say at least 1,300 civilians have been killed in demonstrations since March, along with more than 300 soldiers and police. 'Portraits of Assad' After the speech, state media announced a new presidential decree granting amnesty to prisoners for certain crimes committed before Monday. Mr Assad made a similar pledge on 31 May, resulting in the release of hundreds from jail. Thousands more remain in prison. The government has also published a draft law allowing the formation of new political parties, according to Syria's state-run Sana news agency. Nike outlet A state TV presenter said millions of Syrians across the country were expressing support for the reforms. TV images showed large crowds carrying Mr Assad's portraits and waving Syrian flags. But anti-government protesters have said reforms are no longer enough, and that the only solution is a change of regime. Protesters have also pointed out that there has been no mention of holding the security services accountable for the recent crackdown in the country. Ammar Qurabi, head of the Syrian National Organisation for Human Rights, said members of the "Shabbiha", an Alawite militia loyal to Mr Assad, fired at protesters in Homs, Hama and Mayadeen, a district of Deir al-Zour, leaving at least seven dead and 10 wounded. Nike Air Max Command A resident of Mayadeen said it was "difficult to say who started first, but the army's armoured personnel carriers drove through the (anti-Assad) demonstration firing at people". Meanwhile, Russian Prime Minister Vladmir Putin has said that interference in Syrian affairs was not the solution to the unrest and warned against intervention. "We believe that interference in the sovereign matters of independent states shows little promise," he said, speaking at a news conference in France. Russia is withholding support for a UN resolution that condemns the Syrian government's heavy-handed response to protests. Cheap D&G shoes The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said representatives went on a government-organised visit of the town of Jisr al-Shughour on Monday. Jisr al-Shughour is the town in the north-west of the country near the border with Turkey where the military launched an offensive after officials claimed that 120 army personnel were killed there. The UNHCR said most of Jisr al-Shughour was now deserted, with shops closed, while nearby villages from about 40km (25 miles) away were also quiet, with little evidence of people working in the fields. "Syrian refugees spoke to our team about their fears and trauma. Many had lost family members, who they said were either killed, missing or in hiding," the UNHCR said in a statement. Nike Air Max LeBron 8 "Our team heard accounts of murders, targeted assassinations, assaults, civilians getting killed in crossfire, torture and humiliation by the military. "Most of these people had lost virtually all their belongings and property. In many cases, their livestock were shot, fields were torched, and homes and businesses destroyed or confiscated." More than 10,000 Syrian refugees have crossed the Turkish border, and Ankara says another 10,000 are sheltering on the Syrian side.

Wal-Mart women denied discrimination class action

Mon, 06/20/2011 - 6:46PM by zhangmeimei 0 Comments - 5 Views

The US Supreme Court has dismissed the largest class action lawsuit in history, ruling against women alleging discrimination by US giant Wal-Mart.Cheap Women Nike Dunk Low The court ruled that 1.5 million women who said they were paid less because of gender must pursue action individually. Plaintiffs had sought to unite more than a million women in their effort. The court accepted Wal-Mart's argument that the women work in diverse jobs in stores across the US and do have not enough in common for a class action. 'Literally millions' The court ruling overturned a judgement by a lower appeals court that 1.5 million women who had worked at Wal-Mart retail stores could unite in the class action suit. Nike Air Max 2003 The women, led by a group of named plaintiffs, sought back pay and punitive damages for the class of women, saying the company passed female employees over for promotion and paid them less. Their legal action relied on statistical evidence about pay disparities between male and female employees and anecdotal reports of individual cases of discrimination. The court ruled that the women could not show common "questions of law or fact" that held for all the women in the proposed class (any woman who has worked for one of more than 3,400 Wal-Mart stores in the US since December 1998). "Here, [the group of women employees] wish to sue about literally millions of employment decisions at once," Justice Antonin Scalia wrote. Nike outlet "Without some glue holding the alleged reasons for all those decisions together, it will be impossible to say that examination of all the class members' claims for relief will produce a common answer to the crucial question 'why was I disfavoured.'" Mr Scalia also noted that Wal-Mart's written policy did not allow gender discrimination, and did not have any testing procedure or evaluation method that could be shown to be biased. The BBC's Paul Adams says plaintiffs can still pursue their claims individually, but the implications for Wal-Mart would obviously be much less significant than a suit which could have cost one of the world's biggest private companies billions of dollars. Management disparity Nike Air Max 2009 In a dissenting opinion, the court's four liberal justices agreed the Wal-Mart case did not merit a class action, but would have taken a less narrow view of the requirements for a class action suit over back pay. "The dissenters... are more favourably inclined to class action lawsuits," Tom Goldstein, who has argued 24 cases before the Supreme Court, told the BBC. "They would not close the door to big suits like this so easily, whereas the majority is very concerned about the company's ability to defend itself against each employee." Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who wrote the dissent, noted that 70% of positions paid by the hour in the retailers' stores are women, but that women hold only 33% of management roles. "The plaintiffs' evidence, including class members' tales of their own experiences, suggests that gender bias suffused Wal-Mart's company culture," Ms Ginsburg wrote. Cheap Kids Dunk High She was joined by the two other women on the court, Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elana Kagan, and Justice Stephen Breyer.

Venezuela: El Rodeo inmates transferred amid stand-off

Sun, 06/19/2011 - 7:37PM by zhangmeimei 0 Comments - 2 Views

The Venezuelan authorities have transferred 2,500 prisoners from a jail near Caracas as they seek to reassert control there. Nike Dunk SB Low On Friday, thousands of troops took control of three-quarters of El Rodeo jail in Guatire, after a riot between rival gangs of inmates a week ago. But a stand-off continues elsewhere in the jail, after attempts to negotiate with a group of armed inmates failed. The interior minister said some 50 prisoners were refusing to disarm. In the meantime, the authorities have sought to deal with the prisoners from the part of El Rodeo they already control. Nike Air Max LTD In the early morning of Sunday, they transferred more than two-thirds of those inmates by bus to a number of other prisons in the country. They plan to move the remaining 1,000 inmates later on Sunday. They say the measure is a temporary one, designed to protect the fundamental rights of the prisoners. 'Short circuit' fire Many of the inmates' relatives, however, remain highly anxious about a situation that is still very volatile. Nike Dunk SB Mid Two members of the security forces and at least one prisoner were killed in clashes inside the jail when the security operation started on Friday. And more than 20 inmates were killed in the original rioting last Sunday. Hundreds of relatives have again gathered outside the jail, where they have clashed with security forces in recent days. Some of them watched with great alarm as a fire broke out in part of the prison before dawn on Sunday. The Venezuelan authorities have felt it necessary to deny rumours that they had started the fire deliberately. Nike Air Max Plus A senior government official, Nestor Reverol, said the blaze - which has since been put out - had been caused by a short circuit and that no-one had been hurt. Waiting game Attempts to end the stand-off inside part of El Rodeo have so far failed. On Saturday, Interior Minister Tareck el-Aissimi said the leaders of a group of rebel inmates - whom he called "hostile" and "negative" - had been using their weapons to exert control over more than 1,000 fellow inmates in that area of the jail. Nike outlet Mr Aissami told the state television channel, VTV, that the leaders were demanding that government troops - who number some 4,000 - pull out of the jail. And he said the men would not permit a search of the part of the prison they controlled. The authorities have been trying to implement a crackdown on guns within the jail, and have so far confiscated a number of firearms and a quantity of drugs. But Mr Aissami said he was prepared to play a waiting game. "We'll last out for as long as it takes," he said. Nike Air Max Tailwind "Time is not on their side. We're on our guard, waiting for them to hand over their weapons."

Brazilian landless activist Jose Rainha Jr arrested

Thu, 06/16/2011 - 7:29PM by zhangmeimei 0 Comments - 2 Views

One of the founders of the landless movement in Brazil, Jose Rainha Junior, has been arrested on suspicion of misappropriating public funds. Nike outlet Mr Rainha, 50, is accused of funnelling public money away from landless families, which he denies. He was a leader of Brazil's Landless Workers' Movement until he set up a parallel organisation in 2007. He was convicted of murdering a farmer and a policeman in 1989, but the sentence was overturned on appeal. Mr Rainha was arrested in Presidente Prudente in Sao Paulo state. Police did not say how much money he is accused of misappropriating, but said he was one of 10 suspects wanted in connection with the charges. Founded in 1984, the MST, which campaigns for land reform and the rights of landless workers, is considered the best organised social movement in Brazil. The MST said it would not comment on the arrest of Mr Rainha as he "had not participated in any of the national, state or local meetings of the movement" for years. Nike outlet

Indonesia awaits Abu Bakar Ba'asyir verdict

Indonesia is ramping up security in preparation for a verdict in the terrorism trial of radical cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir. Kids Dunk Low Police chief Sutarman said more than 3,000 security personnel would secure the Jakarta court and surrounding area. Ba'asyir, 72, is accused of helping to organise and fund a jihadi training camp in western Aceh province. He denies involvement with the training camp but has repeatedly defended it as legal under Islam. The cleric has been involved in radical Islamic groups in Indonesia for four decades. Air Max Over the years, he has been repeatedly arrested, jailed and then released. Prosecutors have asked for a life sentence for Ba'asyir. His spokesman, Hasyim Abdullah, said he was read to face "the heaviest punishment". "He believes the verdict is deliberately designed to stop his dakwah [religious teachings]," said Mr Abdullah. He was arrested by anti-terror police last August, months after the Aceh camp was raided by police.D&G shoes The discovery of the camp has led to the arrests of more than 120 suspected terrorists over several months. Experts believe the Aceh group was planning to form a militia to directly attack government targets and eventually impose an Islamic state. Earlier in Ba'asyir's trial, prosecutor Andi Muhammad Taufik told the court that the cleric had helped raise money that would have been used for terrorism. Ba'asyir has said the allegations against him were "engineered by America". coach handbags outlet He was convicted of conspiracy over the 2002 Bali bomb attacks, in which more than 200 people died. But he was freed in 2006 after his sentence was cut, and his conviction was eventually quashed on appeal. Chancellor to call for retail banks to be ring-fenced

Tue, 06/14/2011 - 7:34PM by zhangmeimei 0 Comments - 3 Views

Chancellor George Osborne is to force banks to ring-fence their retail operations from investment banking. Cheap Women Nike Dunk SB High In a speech on Wednesday he will say banks must be set up so that their branches and public savings and loans would not be damaged if their trading arms ran into trouble. The legal separation of the functions of big banks was recommended by the Independent Commission on Banking. He will also announce the privatisation of Northern Rock. The former mutual was nationalised in February 2008, in the early stages of the financial crisis. More protection In his annual Mansion House speech, Mr Osborne will also say that banks will have to hold more capital to protect themselves against future losses than the new international minimum of 7%. Nike Air Max 93Nike outlet The former mutual has been split into a "good bank", containing customers' savings and about 70 branches, and a "bad bank" containing the more toxic loans. The former will be sold, while the latter will continue to be owned by the Treasury. 'Formidable challenges' BBC business editor Robert Peston said: "The minutiae of how retail banking operations are to be insulated from investment banking are yet to be worked out. "The practical and legal challenges are formidable." Stephen Hester, chief executive of the semi-nationalised Royal Bank of Scotland, told MPs last week that putting retail banks into separate subsidiaries could increase the riskiness of the banking system and put up costs for banks and their customers. Syrian army extends campaign around Jisr al-Shughour

Mon, 06/13/2011 - 7:00PM by zhangmeimei 0 Comments - 2 Views

Syria says its forces are pursuing rebels through the countryside around Jisr al-Shughour, after consolidating control over the northern town. Cheap Women Nike Dunk Low Witnesses say the military is pursuing a "scorched earth" strategy in the area, destroying houses and crops. Activists say many villagers have been detained and at least 10 shot dead by army snipers. Hundreds of Syrians have been massing on the border with Turkey, preparing to cross over if the army advances. Turkey has already taken in thousands of refugees. Syrian military sources have told the BBC that "armed men" who fled from Jisr al-Shughour to the town of Maarat al-Numan would be dealt with in a military operation in the next few days. Nike Air Max 2003 Protests against President Bashar al-Assad, who succeeded his father Hafez in 2000, began in mid-March and have spread across the country. Human rights groups say at least 1,300 people have been killed in the crackdown. 'Scorched earth' The government says it has been trying to restore order after 120 security personnel were killed in Jisr al-Shughour last week. Residents say they died after a mutiny and fighting between security forces. Syria has prevented foreign journalists, including those from the BBC, from entering the country, making it difficult to independently verify reports from there. cheap coach handbags outlet But one report quoted witnesses as saying that hundreds of men aged between 18 and 40 had been detained, following a pattern of previous crackdowns by the Syrian security forces. "Jisr [al-Shughour] is finished, it is razed," a man who gave his name as Abu Ali told the Associated Press news agency. "Assad's men are killing anyone within the military, police or others who don't obey their orders blindly." Human rights activists and residents said troops began bombarding Jisr al-Shughour early on Sunday. Helicopter gunships were also seen hovering overhead. An army general told the BBC the troops were only after those responsible for the killings of security personnel earlier this week. The army said the bodies of 10 security personnel were recovered from a mass grave. Nike outlet Correspondents who witnessed the exhumation said four had been beheaded, and most of the bodies were riddled with bullet wounds. 'Defections' The Local Co-ordination Committees, a group that documents the protests, said that over the past two days government snipers had killed at least 10 people in the village of Ariha. The White House on Monday condemned the latest crackdown in the "strongest possible terms". The BBC's Owen Bennett-Jones, who is on the Turkish side of the border with Syria, says more than 5,000 refugees have registered with officials. Nike Air Max 2009 But thousands more may have entered the country unofficially, he says, while many are grouped at the border, awaiting the army's next move. On the Turkish side, four camps have been set up for those fleeing.
